The situation: A
major financial services provider had the objective to consolidate
its position in the market and extend its services into retail banking.
The organisation established a team to create a vision and strategy
for the bank and execute it. There was a requirement to aggressively
capture significant market share while stretching the concept of what
retail banking could be. As the vision emerged, it became clear that
there were significant gaps in experience and capabilities in the team
with regards to the internet and delivering a project of this scale
and in their ability to work together with the other parts of the organisation.
The project needed to be delivered within budget and within a tight
time frame.

The solution: Given
these difficulties, it was decided to engage some outside assistance,
in the form of coaching, for the individuals and for the team itself.
The client’s request was to help them build a strong team, which
would define the vision and strategy and would support them in delivering
the strategy. This was expressed specifically as “to help us
have the difficult conversations quickly”.
The result: Over a sequence of team and one-to-one meetings,
which took place over a period of 18 months, the coaching intervention
contributed to the successful launch of the first internet retail bank
in the UK, which was acknowledged for breaking the mould of traditional
banking with its idiosyncratic advertising campaigns and its offerings. Back |
